Questions for the interview:
  1. What opinion, advice or information do you have which is "counter-intuitive" for most people?
Our function is not automatic. Our heart, digestion, and other internal systems are automatic but our external body is under our control.
  2. You talk about "function" in your book, is this the same as movement?
Function is not painful. Movement that we do such as mopping a floor or playing tennis can both cause pain. This is due to improper body position which results in improper usage. Our mind is "task oriented" and without direction given to the body from us, the body is forced to compensate and do what it can. It is all part of our survival mechanism.
  3. In your book, what do you mean by "stability with movement"?
Our body is a pulley system that requires balance for proper joint function. For instance, if you have more tension in the bicep of your arm, your elbow will be maintained in a flexed position. Using the elbow, no tricep tension, joint is compromised, pain results.
  4. Why do you include a DVD with your book?
We use the modality of stretching to teach stability>neutral spine>maintained> stretches for all major joints of the body. What this means, we stretch the muscles>cross the joint. Movement=tightness>impairs joint=pain=dysfunction
  5. Why does 80% of the population encounter back pain in their lives?
Improper spine position which is a result of the imbalance of the pulley system of the spine. Neutral Spine must be maintained. Refer to the book. 3 sections of spine, each section maintained.
  6. Why are the hips so important to human function?
Your pelvis - base or foundation. Legs connect - pelvis> hips and anchor us . The hip joint-strongest joint in the body-first joint we lose, osteoporosis, no butts or big butts, and unable to get up out of a chair. Squatting properly maintains hip function. No one does them. Bad rap. Injuries. NFL players. Go on our site and watch Stick Squats. Doug-550, Deb-320
  7. Why is the muscular system of the body neglected in medicine?
Neglected by us. Medicine does not understand movement- It is under our control- Can’t give a pill for improvement. Body requires cellular stimulus greater than the adaptive level of the individual. Adaptation to stress is what the body does. No stress to adapt to causes aging.
  8. What do you think is the underlying reason behind the obesity epidemic? Lack of muscle. No muscle= very little food. Most people are set up to store calories. Muscle requires calories and is the destination for food. Body dysfunction over time creates scenario and excess calories above what is needed creates weight problems and eventually obesity.
