The human body remains the most incredible, yet still the most misunderstood creation known to man. We can explore the universe and send space vehicles to distant planets but we have yet to unravel the complexity of the human body and all it’s thousands of functions. Medicine continues to make inroads on the inner workings of the body such as the discovery of the human genome but still fails to understand such things as why 80% of the human population ends up with chronic back pain or why knee and hip joints wear out in people in their 40’s and 50’s. After a combined total of over 75 years of working in the laboratory (a.k.a. the gym) along with constant reading and continual learning, we have unraveled and understand why things like this happen to the human body. The reality of the human body is that we are all alike and most of us started our existence with all the components for perfect mechanical functioning of our body.

We are on the doorstep of controlling cancer and many other debilitating diseases and yet there is very little understood about such seemingly simple things such as why 80% of the population succumbs to back pain or why people are having joint replacements in their 30’s or 40’s.

In this fast paced impatient world, the practice of medicine is focused on treating patient complaints which we feel is a result of the insurance industry, the drug companies and physicians that see too many patients a day without taking the time to truly understand the reasons behind the patients complaints. On top of this you have the problem of patient compliance, which prompts the dispensing of pills to satisfy patient complaints rather than involving the patient in their own care. It truly is a vicious cycle that is a major factor in health care costs soon to be exceeding 3 Trillion dollars a year.

We as educators, feel the reason for the severe apathy of the general public regarding their own health and healthcare is a product of the media and rampant ignorance about how their body functions and each person’s responsibility to make good choices about activities they do, dietary habits, exercise choices as well as day to day choice about smoking and drinking. The media teaches everyone to do what is fun without any regard for the consequences and goes so far as to make people feel that having pain on a regular basis is a normal part of living.

We cannot change the media immediately but we can impact the level of knowledge about the body that we all live in. This is the purpose of our work, to heighten the awareness of people to realize that they have been given the most incredible body to live in and it is their individual responsibility alone, not their choice, to maintain and take care of that body as long as they inhabit it. Your body is the only thing that you and you alone have control over. Your body requires that you give it direction in everything you do, whether at work or play. When properly maintained and directed, your body operates in a healthy, pain free manner.

This is an education guide and resource that teaches the "reading, writing and arithmetic" of human function which is not automatic as most people think. Just as the "3 R's" need to be taught to teach of us so that we can function in the world, the function and the positioning of the body needs to be learned and continually applied by all of us for pain free movement in anything that we do with our body whether at work or play.

The principles and techniques of function that are taught in this book should be applied to everyday activities such as standing, sitting, bending, lifting, kids, walking, driving or any activity that you may do for improved function and performance.
